Helsinki, 5 February 2018- ECHA recommended to add seven substances of very high concern (SVHCs) to the Annex XIV of REACH Authorization List. Two of these substances are toxic for reproduction. The other five have persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) or very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB) properties.

The Canadian government has proposed amendments to its regulations for products containing mercury in order to bring the country's requirements in line with the Minamata Convention. The Minamata Convention on Mercury is a global, legally binding treaty that aims to protect the environment and human health.Canada would adjust mercury content limits for three kinds of products.Comments on the proposed regulation will be accepted until 2 April.

The Eurasian Economic Union stipulates that the use of hazardous substances in electronic and electrical equipment will be consistent with the relevant provisions of the EU RoHS regulation. This regulation applies to the Eurasian Economic Union member states to restrict the use of hazardous metals such as lead and mercury in ordinary household appliances. The regulation comes into force on 1 March, 2018.

14 February, 2018, The European Commission has published its amending Regulation (EU) 2018/213 on the OJ to restrict the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in varnishes and coatings intended to come into contact with food. This regulation also amends the EU Food contact plastic Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 to further tighten the BPA migration limit.

22 February 2018, The EU has notified the WTO of amending Regulation (EU) 10/2011 on plastic FCMs. This amendment authorizes two new substances, extends the authorized use of a previously authorized substance, and decreases the specific migration limits for a previously authorized substance on the basis of new evidence, for materials intended to be in contact with foods. Final date for comments is 23 April, 2018.
